Unhappiness about the economic and social situation in Europe and North America; too high taxes, bad climate, the lust for adventure and a desire for freedom are some of the reasons for the currently high rate of emigrants. Many people want to espape into another world with some money in their pocket and in search of a suitable place at which they can realise their dreams and live in calmness and peace. They wish to start a new life in a secure, calm country with sunshine, beaches and ocean.

Costa Rica (span. for ¨rich coast¨) is a state in Central America whose surface amounts 51,100 km ² and has about 4,200,000 inhabitants. The country lies between 8. and 11. northern degrees of latitude and is therefore located in the tropics. The Costa Rican climate is very good, according to NASA in parts there is even the best climate of the world. There is no cold winter and up to a few exceptions the sun appears every day.

Costa Rica is a small country which has to offer, however, a lot. Mountains with a height of up to 4,000 metres, two oceans (the Pacific and the Caribbean), volcanoes and dreamlike beaches are only some of many attractions around here. The Pacific side of Costa Rica offers a more than 1,000-km-long coast. The country has no army (abolished since 1948). The saved money was used for improving the education system and has resulted of the fact that the alphabetization rate among the population in Costa Rica is now 97%. There are more teachers than policemen but nevertheless Costa Rica is a safe region. In their latest study for the year 2007 the Control-Risks-Institut has evaluated the political risk as well as the security risk for travelers and investors in Costa Rica as low.

Costa Rica is a country where you can live very well if you are not dependent on earning your living. Despite of higher living costs you can live safely and with a lot more amenities than in its neighboring countries Nicaragua and Panama, .

But also each province of Costa Rica differ greatly concerning the investment and living conditions. We have done good experiences in Guanacaste.

In case you want to live and earn money in Costa Rica you should be able to speak Spanish, or at least start to learn it. There are many local teachers or other people who give private Spanish lessons at reasonable prices. Something else you should learn first of all is that things need time here. Here the clocks chime at a different pace and often you will reach your goal sooner if you have patience, tenacy and most of all if you are friendly.

It is no use to live such a stressful life as in the US or Europe. We, a group of friends, have been living quite a long time here now, some for more than 20 years, and we feel really good here!

It is rather difficult to find a well-payed job in Costa Rica under normal circumstances and taking into account the low salaries. However, if you have some money, patience and a business idea the chances are much better.

For a few years now, Costa Rica has opened up to the new technologies market and offers good conditions for new companies in this field. Foreigners are offered very good investment possibilities.

In case you do not know Costa Rica yet we suggest you visit this country first. The Caribbean and Pacific coast, the volcanoes, the fascinating flora and fauna, the mountains, the very diverse and protected areas makes Costa Rica to a real adventure.

Costa Rica wants a stronger economic relation to Europe

At the moment Costa Rica is the most important exporter in the continent of Central America, obtaining more than 51% of the exportation to the European Union. Monday the 22th of October the first meeting for the contract of free commerce and a further expansion of the cooperation to Europe (TLC) will be realized in San José. Representatives of the agriculture and the food industry demand the exclusion of agriculture products like milk, sugar, rice and corn of the contract, as well as in already existing agreements. Because already 43% of the agriculture sales are sent to 27 countries of Europe, as the chamber of commerce (Cadexco) confirms. The delegation of Costa Rica hopes to receive the signature of the contract of cooperation in the middle of 2008.

The Plebiscite CAFTA - Si

The inhabitants of Costa Rica approved the trade agreement Cafta between the United States and Costa Rica the penultimate Sunday. 51,6% of the electors agreed upon the convention to which the countries Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and the Dominican republic belong to, too. But the voter participation did amount to only 60%. The supporter of the convention as well as the president Oskar Arias hope to achieve extensive investments and new job positions. The detractors do not remain silent after the victory. They fear an inundation of US-products at the market of Costa Rica, extensive privatizations, a lot of limitations towards the environmental protection and of the rights of workers combined with increasing unemployment and the loss of national sovereignty. After several demonstrations before the election they are planning a meeting of the Cafta-detractors in terms of a “patriotic committee” at the 27th of October in San José.

The government of Aria needs aditional tax receipts urgently to realize the necessary investments into the infrastructure of the country. In the process comprehensive financial and tax reforms that have been discussed since more than four years in the parliament shell help. The government of Aria suggested different parts of the reform legislation to the parliament again; up to now they were not confirmed.

The United States is the biggest trade partner with a participation of nearly 40%, although the part has been decreasing from 52% to 39% since 2000. The most important trade partner of Costa Rica in between the European Union is Germany.

Here some more facts:
The economy of Costa Rica accreted in 2006 about 7,9% of the gross domestic product (GDP). In the year 2007 and 2008 an economic growth of 5% as the case might be 3,8% is expected. After the rise of the exportations in 2005 about 11,5% the growth rate of 17,1% in the year 2006 were achieved. The budget deficit amounts to only 0,5% (previous year: 2,3%). The national debt rose about 3% to about 53% of the GDP.
